Why does leaping create an advantage? Reaction time at the plate.

If two pitchers throw 65 mph and one drags a foot and the other leaps (with no drag at all) the reaction time at the plate for the batter is shorter for the pitcher who leaps. The higher and farther the leap, the less reaction time the batter has - its effective mph.

This is why the more gregarious pitchers that do it get called for it - 1) its more obvious and 2) for those who know the advantage is more because the higher and longer the leap - the lower the effective batter reaction time there is...

If the NCAA accepts the rule change - there will be a lot more leapers happening - I would expect the rubber to be moved back another 1-2 ft in 3-5 yrs.

Go Hokies!
